Benidorm: the town that never sleeps

Benidorm is a town that has experienced strong growth over recent years. This is because entertainment options have multiplied during the last few years. Furthermore, being on the Costa Blanca means it has very good beaches and coves. 

It is known as the New York of the Mediterranean, because, like the cosmopolitan city, it never sleeps.

 Moreover, it is the town with the most skyscapers in Spain and the town with the most skyscrapers per square metre anywhere in the world, except New York.

Benidorm Beaches

Among Benidorm’s most attractive features are its beaches, and three of them actually have the distinction of the blue flag, which is the most important distinction awarded by the European Union. These beaches are Levante, Poniente and Mal Pas.

• The largest is Poniente, which is more than three kilometres long. You can go for long walks along it. It is a quiet beach characterised by being more crowded with Spanish tourists. It is 75 metres wide, making it fairly spacious. The beach is perfectly maintained and offers a wide variety of services.
• Levante beach is one of the most famous in Europe, it is two kilometres long and the sand is fine. Furthermore, it offers a lot of complementary services such as hammocks, swings childen’s toys etc. 
• Mal Pas cove separates Levante and Poniente, and is around 120 metres long. The sand is fine and golden. It has a blue flag and a width of around 20 metres. This is a more sheltered and quieter beach. Benidorm’s coves are, without doubt, beautiful.

Benidorm Festivals

Benidorm is a town that is always awake, you can always see cars in the streets and people coming and going. It is a leading town when it comes to nightlife opportunites. It has some discotheques as good as anything in Europe and around 160 pubs, where you can go to improve your mood.

The English area makes you think you are in London and a visit is highly recommended to soak up English culture. You must, without doubt, try English cider.

If it is a more traditional type of festival you are looking for, you could celebrate Holy Week (which has been celebrated in Benidorm since before 1967) and which has a great tradition in the town. It is a very good attraction for tourists.

With respect to the patronal festivals, these are in honour of the Virgin of Suffrage and St. James the Apostle, and are celebrated in the second week of November, concluding on the following Wednesday. These celebrations are framed within the legend of March 1740. This legend affirms the survival of the image of the Virgin after the boat it was in, caught fire.

Benidorm Town Hall

The town hall promotes what might be described as daytime culture, such as, for example, local concerts that usually also involve international artists, poetry recitals, conjuring shows and tapas and pinchos competitions, which are usually great fun and greatly enjoyed, especially by foreign visitors. A visit to the theatre is also one of the best things to do, on a cultural level, in the town. The La Barqueta Association usually puts on very good exhibitions and is also highly recommended.

In conclusion, Benidorm deserves its reputation as the New York of Europe, you will love the skyscapers and the seaside atmosphere and so you must visit no matter what.
